My Ballerina

We have officially signed Blair up to take dance. She keeps telling me, “Mama, I want to go to dance school.”

She met her teacher at the studio’s meet and greet, and today we bought her leotards. Plural. I couldn’t tell her she couldn’t have the pink one and the blue one. And the purple one. Bad. So weak.

But doesn’t she look so stinkin’ cute? And she’s not even as big as a minute which makes the tiny little leotard even more precious!

She is SO excited, and we are too!

This kind of stuff just happens to us.

I made two desserts for our Young Farmer event today. Brad loaded the car, and we all got in. Then we had to put one more thing in the back…

…and Gus decided he was going with us. :)

It was just one of those things you just can’t worry about! We didn’t expect a huge crowd anyway, so I didn’t figure we’d need it. But you better bet Brad and I brought that chocolate delight back home – we can eat around that foot print!

Three Weeks

This week we have had more sweetness, lots of eating, and thrush. Thrush. Again.

We dealt with thrush with Blair for months. I finally figured out that it was yeast on Leighton’s bottom that wouldn’t get better. Then I looked in his mouth. Ugh. But we’re getting treated, and we’re gonna knock it out way faster than last time! And we’re not doing bottles yet, so I don’t really have boiling to do – another plus!

We might have had a tad of a growth spurt this week. He seemed to be nursing more frequently for a few days in there. Despite the thrush, he continues to eat very well.

The newborn clothes are fitting but not for long! (Yippee! Blair wore newborn for forEVER!) I’ve put him in a few 3 month things. They’re a bit big but more appropriate when we go outside because most of the newborn stuff is long sleeve. But I’m not wishing him to get big either. I’m trying to enjoy every minute!

We started taking a bath this week. I did the counter for a few more times after his umbilical cord fell off, and then Tuesday we pulled out the blue tub. Blair was so excited. But she doesn’t quite get the hasty part of the bath so that baby doesn’t “dirty” the water! He loves a bath though.

We still don’t have too much of a routine. The feedings are pretty regular at 2 1/2 to 3 hours apart. His wakeful times vary. Sometimes he is awake for a while in the mornings, and sometimes he waits until lunchtime. He most always has a nice long awake time at night – between two feedings.

He’s not a big fan of self-soothing. If he’s full, he’ll lie on the boppy and look around as happy as can be, but if he’s sleepy, he wants to be nursed to sleep. We’re still working on a paci. I’ve got about 10 different kinds that I’m trying to get him to take! I hope when we get rid of thrush he’ll be more willing to take one – that and introducing a bottle will help too, I think.

Leighton also seems to like to be outside. It hasn’t been quite as hot this week, so we’ve spent some time outside with Blair, we’ve eaten lunch under the car port we just built, and we’ve taken Ranger rides! Leighton’s car seat fits great in the Ranger, so we take off!

Blair has been a bit of a handful this week. In her defense, she’s been getting up really super early. She’s also not minding. At all. She’s sweet, but she’s not minding. Even though I don’t want to, I have to get on to her. She starts dance soon, and she will not be acting like that with someone else! I’m sure we’ll make it over this little hump in no time. She sure loves her brother!

She says things like “He loves me,” “I’m excited to see Yeighton!” and “Good mohnin’ Yeighton!”

Special Occasion French Toast Recipe

Growing up mom made french toast every once in a while – usually on special occasions. It was the yummy needs-to-be-eaten-only-on-special-occasions-because-it’s-so-bad-for-you french toast. She battered and deep fried it. You know, like all good southern moms would do!

Rght now I can picture that fluffy piece of french toast, sprinkled with just the right amount of powdered sugar and cinnamon, sitting on one of my mom’s strawberry plates. The edges were like a funnel cake – with the little crusty fried pieces of batter. Yum. And the best part was after eating it, I got to lick the fork that was caked in sugary, cinnamony, yumminess. I always took special care to allow the fork to get cakey just so I could eat it all off at the end!

While I was pregnant with Leighton, I got on a french toast kick, and I modified my mom’s french toast a bit to make it easier. It’s probably still best for only special occasions though!

Start with an egg and whisk in 4 heaping tablespoons of flour and 1/2 cup milk. Whisk until smooth. It should be thinner than pancake batter but not too soupy.

Dip your bread into the batter and let the bread soak the batter in really well. I like to use old bread or the pieces right next to the end piece – they’re always more stale than the rest!

On medium heat, melt about 1 tablespoon of butter (per piece of toast if you’re using a large skillet) in a non-stick skillet. I like salted butter for this. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with a little deep frying every once in a while!

Cook until toasty brown on both sides and until the bread thickens or fluffs up in the middle.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Serve with syrup – optional – I eat mine plain! This batter makes about 3 pieces of french toast.

Two Weeks

This week has been another good one – mostly at home still!

outside leighton 2 weeks 080412 (28)Two weeks!

There’s talk that he might look like my baby brother… He miiight (as Blair would say!)

leighton and john 072812 (6)leighton and john 072812 (7)

He’s still eating every 2 – 3 hours, but is beginning to stretch out at night to 3 1/2 or 4 hours. I wake him up during the day at 3 hours if he doesn’t wake himself. He’s nursing fabulously. I think it’s funny how he pretends he’s being starved. Then when he finally starts eating he puts his little fists up to his cheeks.

He has started to want to nurse himself to sleep, so I’ve been putting him down awake some to get him used to getting himself to sleep. He’s taking a gumdrop pacifier some as well. When I know he’s full and just wanting comfort, I give him the pacifier to get him to sleep.

family pool time 072912 (37)We went to the pool again! I think he likes it.

He usually has about two good wakeful times during the day – one in the morning and one in the late evening. He’s content to lie on the boppy or in my lap looking around and flapping his hands here, there, and everywhere.

blair holding leighton for the first time 073012 (2)Blair finally asked to hold him!

We went back to the pediatrician’s office on Wednesday for a checkup, and he weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces – that’s 11 ounces up from Tuesday! I might have me a fat baby after all! They measured him at 20 inches.

cookies at gigi's 080212 (5)We spent the night at Gigi’s after seeing the doctor. I thought Brad was trying to get rid of us because it was his idea, but I think he’s just worried about me being cooped up too long! Blair had a good time of course!

Poor Leighton has a diaper rash already. Blair never had one, not even once, and Leighton has a horrible one his second week of life. I must have eaten something that burned his bottom, because I change his diaper often, and it still happened.

andad visits 072912 (3)andad visits 072912 (7)Andad came to visit!

Towards the end of this week, I’m starting to wonder if he might be going through a little growth spurt. He’s wanting to eat more often during the day, and he was completely inconsolable in the car one evening although I had just fed him! This might be a weekly thing!

We had out first public outing this week, and I was a wreck – super stressed. We took him to Mexican. There were very few people there, but Blair was touching everything and wanting to touch him, and I just about had a panic attack. Even though our pedi said there are no restrictions and just to be smart -- the germ thing is hard to let go!

The weather has been pretty good, so I’ve been taking Blair outside to swing. And right at the end of the week I felt good enough (FINALLY less sore!) to go for a walk, so we did!

That’s week two with this sweet baby. I have to be honest and say that I thought we were going to have a fussy one because Blair was so sweet. But it looks like we have two sweet babies – Blair is still so sweet she could make you cry!
