Baked Beans (for those who really don’t like baked beans)

I’ll be honest – if you know me, you don’t expect anything less ;-) – I’m not a huge fan of baked beans. So when Brad wanted baked beans for Blair’s owl birthday party, I wanted to do something different. The result was a mixture of a few recipes and some some personal preferences, and my baked beans got rave reviews! My mom made them for Christmas, and my cousin even said that he didn’t really care for baked beans either, but he could eat his weight in those baked beans.

So here they are. Baked beans for those who really don’t like baked beans.

1 pound ground beef

1 pound ground sausage

1 pound bacon

1 large onion, or 2 medium, chopped

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup vinegar barbeque sauce

1/2 cup ketchup

1/4 cup mustard

1 tsp chili powder

2 tsp salt

pepper to taste

2 (15 oz) cans pork and beans

2 (15 oz) cans butter beans, drained

Brown the beef and sausage, breaking up well. Drain. Cook the bacon in a large skillet and set aside on paper towels. In the bacon grease, cook the onion. Remove and drain.

In a large bowl, combine the sugars, barbeque sauce, ketchup, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Add the beans. Crumble the bacon and add to mixture. Add meat and onions and mix well. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Let me know if these changed your opinion of baked beans – or made you love them even more!

Ashlee - we ate something like this - I think they were called campfire baked beans - and we loved them too. I will have to try and find the original recipe. My mother has made them since I was 9 or so. Hope it is a good week for you.
