We did an owl party for Blair’s second birthday this year. The inspiration for the owl themed party came from an owl dress I got for her from Kelly’s Kids, and the whole party turned out so cute.
I wanted to use the basic colors in the dress, and I found the perfect paper for the invitations on sale at Hobby Lobby.
I made the pattern for the invitations tracing the basic shape of an owl body I found. I resized and reshaped it until it was just what I wanted and fit in a 5 x 7 envelope. Here is my pattern. I traced both sides of the one wing to make the two wings – in other words, on printed paper, you have trace the wing and flip the wing over and trace it again for it to work for both sides of the owl.
Most of the owl bodies were solid, and I used the printed paper for the wings – I thought it looked better that way.
The mum body wasn’t my favorite, so I scrapped it.
I printed the invitation wording on colored paper, cut them out in rectangles, glued them on. I think I used the biggest eyes that Hobby Lobby had. I used regular school glue to put them on, but I would use rubber cement if I did them again. With the owls I used for decoration, I had a problem with the eyes popping off because they’re so slick on the back.
The finished invitations!
This is the food table with the cake, cookies, and pumpkin! I decorated with the same owls I made for the invitations.
On the tables, I had a crate with an owl on each side to hold napkins and silverware. I already had the crates from when I did Brad’s Grandpop’s 100th birthday a few years back – they’re also from Hobby Lobby. They worked out perfectly for this party too!
I had to take this picture inside. The blue table cloths made the color weird in all the pictures (note to self!), and I couldn’t get the close up to turn out right.
And then I used the wooden crates decorated with an owl on the food table for different kinds of chips.
The plates and napkins came from the party store (on sale!). The colors were perfect!
My sweet husband carved the owl in the pumpkin using a kit I found at Wal-mart.
Last, but best of all, my mom made the fabulous owl birthday cake, and my sister made the cookies.
Aunt Linnie’s cookies are as delicious as they are adorable! She will make whatever cookie you want, and she’ll decorate it just right! And she ships! Check out her blog for more information!
And she wanted to make sure everyone had one!
And my mom made Blair’s cake again this year. Last year she did an adorable pig cake. As always she did a fantastic job on this year’s owl cake. The cake’s top layer was red velvet and the bottom chocolate -- two types of cake that Blair loves.
Although I had some ideas for owl favors, I decided that since we just invited family and no kids came that we would do favors another birthday!
It was a fun day at Miss Blair’s owl themed birthday party!

It is amazing the way that all of the elements coordinate. You and your family are very talented. The cookies your sister made are amazing.
What was the cake topper made of? Was it fondant?
Sabrina, yes, it was fondant.
Thank you for sharing this! It is absolutely adorable! :)
I tried going to the link for your pattern for the invites but it's not working. Can you email your pattern to me? earleyfamily05@hotmail.com
I tried the link too for the pattern, but it's not working. Can you email me too: amyeldridge81@yahoo.com. Thank you so much! Everything is adorable.
This is a beautiful party!!!!! You have the perfect amount of "fuss" for me! It looks like a great effort, but not so overdone that you're completely exhausted and the guest feel uncomfortable. What a great example to a newer mom like me :) thanks for sharing!
I loved reading about Blair's owl party! Such cute ideas. Q...what were your ideas for party favors? My baby girl is turning 2 soon and I need ideas since kids are coming! THANK YOU!
I would probably do chocolate candy pops with an owl mold -- they can double as decorations. Or these finger puppets are cute: http://www.thegreenwife.com/2010/01/01/owl-party-favors-a-tutorial-and-a-giveaway/
