It was not bad for us. I told EF that she is a "big girl" and she is too big for pacis. Pacis are for babies. Maybe you could give them to a baby or to a baby just born at the hospital. EF walks around saying "sasha (paci) fo babies" and "too big". :) I think it was easier because she understood and was stubborn in not wanting it after we "threw them away" (of course I kept them!!). Good luck!!!
